Birth Story Listening

Finding the medicine in your birth story

What you’re shedding is compost for what you’re growing.

A ritual of return

Birth Story Listening is a unique structured process to help you process difficult birth experiences.

Your birth story is a pivotal narrative that you weave on your postpartum return. Without tending to, your story may distort into judgments and beliefs about yourself that can negatively impact your life, your relationships, and your parenting. The narrative you wove is often more impactful than the events themselves.

Is there something bothering you about your pregnancy, birth, or postpartum experience? Does something feel unresolved? Are there parts of your story that you can’t stop thinking about, try to avoid thinking about, &/or feel that you can’t talk about? Was there a moment that left you feeling shocked, confused, betrayed, or ashamed?

Birth Story Listening, developed by midwife Pam England, creator of Birthing from Within and author of Ancient Map for Modern Birth, is not merely a re-telling or de-briefing. As a trained Birth Story Listener, I guide you to the heart of the assumptions, meaning, and beliefs you are taking from your birth story and what you believe that means about yourself.

Although you can’t change the events and occurrences, you can examine and transform your beliefs and assumptions with the goal of attaining self-compassion & self-love.

Are you motivated to transform your birth story?

  • Birth Story Listening benefits anyone who has experienced or witnessed a birth & has unresolved feelings about it. This could be birthing people, partners, birth professionals, birth workers, family, etc.

  • The first few weeks or months after birth are for integration & story weaving. Some people feel ready to have a session at 3 months postpartum & others may wait decades. There is no one path to healing, meaning-making, & self-compassion.

  • Birth Story Listening is an alternative modality of integrating a birth experience. It is not therapy. It can be used in conjunction with therapy &/or other healing modalities. I find the combination of Birth Story Listening, journaling, & flower essence remedies to be particularly potent.
